Several students have asked me what is the meaning of the sentence at the top of this page. It means "abandon all hope, you who enter". It is the inscription on the gates of hell in Dante's Divine Comedy. The whole inscription is as follows:

Lasciate ogni speranza voi ch'entrate

"Per me si va ne la cittá dollente,
per me si va ne l'etterno dolore,
per me si va tra la perduta gente.
Giustizia mosse il mio alto fattore;
fecemi la divian podestate,
la somma sapienza e'l primo amore.
Dinazi a me non fuor cose create
se no etterne, e io etterno duro.
Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate".

No need to panic, though. Dante does reach paridise... eventually.
